Governance and organization development

The NNFU is focused on enhancing governance and institutional development. Its constitution has been reviewed twice, with the most recent update in 2023, and new leadership is elected every three years, receiving governance training. The Strategic Plan is reviewed every five years. The organization follows clear policies that guide the behavior of its members, leaders, and staff. Annual National Council meetings and Congress are held, and the NNFU consistently produces an annual report, including an unqualified audit report.

The NNFU also supports its members by reviewing the constitutions of RFUs and FAs, developing Standard Operating Procedures, and offering governance training and assistance with technical and financial reporting.

Lobby and Advocacy

Advocacy and lobby are the core mandate of the NNFU. As per its mandate, the NNFU was established to serve as a mouthpiece of Namibian communal and emerging farmers by addressing issues affecting the farmers through lobby and advocacy. The NNFU runs lobby and advocate programmes to ensure improvement of conditions for its members. The success of the NNFU is measured on how many important and relevant agricultural industry issues addressed in particular year that improve food security, productivity and profitability of its members and farmers at large. Each year, NNFU identify at least 5 priority agricultural industry issues that effects its members and work towards addressing them.

In addition to the advocacy and lobbying on specific issues, the NNFU seats on several agricultural committees and boards which serves as an opportunity to lobby and advocate for the interest of members and farmers at large (please see the list of committees where NNFU is represented). Moreover, NNFU participates in agricultural industry policy and programme reviews which are important for agriculture industry. As a voice of farmers, NNFU prides itself in advocating and lobbying for farmers among stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

Organisation Sustainability

Since NNFU is a non-profit organization and its main source of income is generated through donors and the levies imposed on livestock and crop, and meat and crop products as approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform. NNFU and its members have embarked upon financial sustainability initiatives. These include income generation ideas, cost saving initiatives, efficient and cost-effective measures and smart partnership across its structures.

Stakeholders’ Engagement and Communication and visibility

The NNFU prioritizes stakeholder engagement, communication, and visibility to maintain communication with its members, strategic partners, donors, and the broader community. Periodically, NNFU conduct courtesy visits to our key stakeholders to exchange information but importantly to advocate and lobby regarding issues affecting our members.  We keep our website updated and vibrant as means to update our members and stakeholders.  Press release is conducted when necessary.
